Fairy Tale Speech and Language Unit

For the next couple weeks, we will doing a Fairy Tale theme in speech therapy. I tend to focus on vocabulary related to kings, queens, princes, and princesses. There are so many fairy tales that it can be hard to narrow it down to a specific theme. We read a lot of different ones - Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Pigs, Goldilocks, etc. However, we really focus on ones like The Princess and the Pea, Cinderella, Rapunzel, etc. Most of my activities are centered around these themes.

For articulation, I love to make these Do-A-Dot Crowns with my patients.

I also do this Sensory Bag Speech: Castle activity. It's an easy way to incorporate some sensory input for those kiddos that need it.

And finally, I use these Dragon Spinners for extra practice and homework.

These Unicorn Spinners would also work great with this theme.

For language, I primarily use this Fairy Tale Speech and Language Unit. It has activities and worksheets for concepts, grammar, vocabulary, social skills, etc.

I also use this King and Queen of Hearts activity from Monae's Speech House. It is technically and Valentine's Day activity, but it easily works with a fairy tale theme as well.

I use the castle picture scene from Katrina Bevan's Picture Scene Packet and Dragon Vocabulary Activity from Speech Room News to supplement my language materials.

Crafts are a great way to work on processing, sequencing, following directions, etc. I use the dragon and fairy wand crafts from my Craft Visuals Mega Pack during this unit.

I love to incorporate books into therapy. I use fairy tale story books to tell the tales to the kids. But I also like to use other books related to the theme. For my little ones, I like to add in these books:

That's Not My Dragon (affiliate link)

Muddle and Match Fairy Tales (affiliate link)

For my older kids, I love these books for nonfiction reading, listening for details, reading comprehension, comparing, describing, vocabulary, and much more.

See Inside Famous Palaces (affiliate link)
Castles (affiliate link)
Castles (affiliate link)

This Castle Wipe Clean Activity Book has a ton of cute activities in it to teach vocabulary, use as reinforcers, and teach various concepts (same different, emotions, quantities, etc).

I use this castle toy from my childhood, plus some Little People Princesses (affiliate link), to do some themed play-based therapy. I know many of my little bitties are not able to participate in completely themed sessions, as I often have to follow their lead. But I love to have a few options that fit into the theme.

There are tons of great castle toys (affiliate link) on Amazon if you are looking to add one to your therapy room.

I also use the Learning Resources Rock and Gem Surprise toy (affiliate link) + a crown print out to incorporate colors, shapes, fine motor skills, following directions, etc into play based therapy.

We also play Pretty Pretty Princess and a Princess Matching Game for social skills practice, reinforcers, etc.

I recently added this game to my Amazon cart. It looks like it would be a super fun game to add to my collection.

All of these activities usually last me two weeks worth of therapy, plus some things to send home. I hope you were able to find something you could use in your own therapy room. Thanks for stopping by!
